On the OneSight trip, OD students will work under the supervision of Luxottica Retail affiliated doctors performing comprehensive eye exams. They will also help support a core team of Luxottica volunteers in the frame fitting, manufacturing and dispensing of new eyewear. For the OD students selected, Luxottica Retail will cover expenses associated with the clinic, including air fare, accommodations and meals.
Luxottica Eye Care, OneSight and the American Optometric Student Association (AOSA) first partnered in 2017 on a OneSight clinic and selected 25 optometry students to travel to Tanzania on mission to help people who need access to vision care. The students who went to Tanzania represented 16 leading optometry schools across three graduation years. The National Optometric Students Association (NOSA) is joining this year as a program sponsor.
"The 2017 OneSight trip to Tanzania was one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had. It felt really good to know that we were able to make a real impact in the lives of the thousands of individuals who would otherwise not have had access to eye care. What made the experience even more special was getting to share it with so many wonderful students and doctors who I now consider to be good friends," says Fayiz Mahgoub, ’18, Western University of Health Services – College of Optometry.
“Participation in a OneSight clinic and experiencing the world sight crisis first hand is life-changing for those who have dedicated their talents to helping others see,” says Jason Singh, OD, chief medical officer and Vice President of Eye Care with Luxottica Retail North America. “I’m excited that the partnership between Luxottica Eye Care, OneSight and the AOSA continues to grow and more students will be given an opportunity to participate.”
