“Seeing clearly is like walking out of darkness.”
My name is Akimanizanye Salima. I live in Musanze district, in the north province of Rwanda. My husband died in 2010 in a car accident, and my life became really difficult. For a time, I didn’t even have a house to live in. I had to feed my children, dress them and pay for their school fees myself. I provide for my family by washing clothes for people. I also buy secondhand clothes to sell in town. I first noticed I was having problems with my eyes in 2015. I couldn’t read, or see my children. Even chatting with my friends was harder. It became difficult to do my washing job, and to work in the market. That made it hard to take care of my family. If I cannot see, I cannot work. If I cannot work, I can’t feed my children. And that breaks my heart.
It used to be hard for us to get eye care here. The journey was too long. And it was too expensive. So I just stayed home, and my vision problems became worse. But a vision center opened last year here in the north, and today getting care is so much easier. At the vision center, everything becomes clear. The doctor I met told me I needed eyeglasses. Since I received them, everything has changed. Seeing clearly is like walking out of darkness. I can go anywhere. I have no problem working. I can connect better with my kids. Now I can read them books. It makes me happy to see my kids playing. I love to see them enjoying life with my own eyes. I love to see my children smiling. I love to see this beautiful country. Now, I can see a better life. I can see a better Rwanda. And it fills my heart with joy.
